Extractions

Extractions

A tooth extraction is the purposeful removal of a tooth. At the Isen Dental office near Fariview Mall in North York, we do all we can to save damaged and infected teeth with root canal therapy, crowns, and various restorative treatments. However, sometimes the infection or damage to a tooth is so severe that the only way to restore oral health and relieve pain is by removing a tooth.

Dental extractions may also be necessary in preparation for braces, dentures, or implant-supported dentures. As part of a dental treatment plan, this procedure can benefit your short- and long-term oral health. We use modern dental techniques, offer sedation for anxious patients, always extend personalized care.

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?
Some common scenarios in which an extraction may be recommended include:
• Severe tooth decay
• Internal tooth infection
• A dead or dying tooth
• Severe gum disease
• Cracked or broken teeth
• Wisdom teeth causing dental misalignment or pain (or as a preventive measure)
• To prepare for an orthodontic treatment plan
• To remove “extra” teeth or “shark” teeth
• To prepare for full dentures or implant-retained dentures

When an infected tooth is left untreated, tooth loss can result. As the infection spreads, it may become blood-borne and lead to a more serious health situation. Be sure to have your oral health evaluated if you suffer from a chronic toothache or know that old dental work has failed.

What Can I Expect During Extractions?
Prior to tooth extraction, we will review the extent of the tooth’s damage by taking x-rays. Your Isen Dental Clinic dentist will walk you through every step of the process and answer any questions you have. Then, we’ll schedule your appointment at a convenient time when you can take a few days to recuperate afterward.
To ensure your comfort throughout tooth extractions, we will numb the area surrounding the tooth with a local anesthetic. You may need a deeper sedative if multiple or large teeth are being removed. All Dr. Isen use modern techniques, instruments, and technology to provide excellent care to our patients. The procedure takes less than an hour for one tooth, in most cases. If your case differs, you’ll be advised of the details when scheduling the extraction appointment.

What Can I Expect During Recovery?
After dental extractions, you may experience some swelling, so be sure to follow the aftercare instructions you receive from our doctors.
Apply ice to the affected area and take recommended medications as advised. Your recovery time will depend on many factors, including but not limited to:
• The state of your overall health
• Your age
• Medications you take
• Treatments you’re undergoing
• How many and which teeth were removed
• Whether you rest and follow post-operative instructions
• Whether you smoke

In the days following the procedure, eat soft foods to minimize irritation. Also rinse your mouth with warm salt water to keep the site of the extraction clean. We offer a variety of restorative treatments, such as dental implants, to replace extracted teeth, when appropriate.

What Are the Benefits of Tooth Extraction?

For implant and orthodontic patients, extraction may be a prerequisite to qualify for treatment. Patients with a damaged tooth should experience immediate relief following the procedure but will also benefit long-term from improved oral health.
